Outback Festivals Sponsors 2012
May 14th, 2012
Wakakirri Outback Festival is very pleased to announce our 2012 Festival Sponsors. We are still proud to be associated with DEEWR, NITV and Aurora.
This year we also are excited to again be working with IHHP (Indigneous Hip Hop Projects) in all of our locations. Outback has worked with IHHP for a few years now and the students always look forward to their week long programs and presentations.
Outback Festivals has a NEW sponsor for 2012 – WesTrac. WesTrac has a strong commitment to communities and is the second largest provider of apprenticeships in Australia following the Federal Government. We are eager for them to bring their message to our communities, and to introduce the WesTrac Institute to our secondary school students.
Please read all about our Sponsors on our Wakakirri Sponsors page.

Halls Creek WA a new location!

Halls Creek WA Is Our New Location
2012 Outback Festival
The Wakakirri Outback Program gives Indigenous students and their communities from remote and regional areas of Australia the opportunity to hold a festival, celebrating their community and culture. The program consists of two stages:
Stage 1: Wakakirri provides local schools with workshops in filmmaking, performing and visual arts so they can create works for the festival. Wakakirri also sets up community festival committees and provides festival work experience for students. This process takes 6-10 weeks.
Stage 2: Wakakirri helps the community stage a one day festival. Festival activities include a short film festival, local and imported entertainment as well as cultural, career and health workshops for students and a community BBQ.
All works produced for the Festival are shown to schools in capital cities around Australia with an aim of bridging cultural divides. Wakakirri returns to the same communities for three years with an aim of developing students self esteem, career aspirations and healthy lifestyle choices in a manner that resonates with contemporary youth culture.
An exciting new location has been added to Wakakiri’s Outback Festival this year – Halls Creek Western Australia. In addition to Barunga NT and Ceduna SA we are taking our Festival to Halls Creek District High School, Fitzroy Crossing District High School, and Ngalangangpum School at Warmun.
These schools are in the West Kimberly area and are true Outback towns. This location is also the gateway to some of the country’s most spectacular natural landscapes and also has some of the country’s most well known Aboriginal artists. We are holding a Community Meeting in Halls Creek on May 30 for all interested who want to be part of our festival. Please see the Community Meeting Notice on the link. Halls Creek Meeting Notice 30.05.12
Halls Creek District High School (HCDHS) a K-Y12 School that provides diverse learning programs for 350+ students, mainly Indigenous. Unique learning programs such as Horse Mastery and Station Skills are offered through local partnerships which also assist Work Experience and VET Programs for our Senior School (Yrs 10-12). 405 students are enrolled and 96% are Indigenous.
Fitzroy District High School, situated on the northern bank of the Fitzroy River, is approximately 400km east of Broome. The school has approximately 270 students K-Y12. Around 95% of students are Aboriginal. The School Mission, with the motto Strong Minds Strong Culture, is to provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve their full potential and contribute to society.
Ngalangangpum School, Warmun, a co-educational primary Catholic school of 120 students from K-Y10 serving the Warmun Aboriginal Community. The school is centred on the Mother and Child – symbol of the Two-Way process. Traditional aspects of education are recognised and given status equal to other curriculum subjects. In this way students can learn to value both traditions.
Wakakirri is already in talks with peak Community Stakeholders in the area, such as Kimberley Language Resource Centre (the first language centre in Australia), Kimberley Land Council, Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre as well as Shire representatives, community leaders and Media partners and in May we will visit the community and bring our scriptwriters to work with the kids.
