ABOUT THE ARTIST

Wil Leong was assigned the task of creating the artwork for the new-look Wakakirri website.

Wil Leong was born in 1984, in Sydney. Long since drawing a picture for his rosy-cheeked kindergarten teacher, the pencil has been Wil's toy of choice.

He recently attended the College of Fine Arts, where he studied graphic and textile design. Wil's work consists of ideas hallucinated by minute lines adorned with more minute lines, and has appeared in everything from magazines, shop fronts, clothing, websites, walls and galleries.

Currently, he is a designer/ illustrator by day, and by night he puts on his top hat and tries his luck as an artist.

ABOUT THE DRAWING

“Mr Squiggles” is a challenge directed at the imagination. It involves cooking up a story with very particular ingredients. A simple irregular triangle next to an elongated rectangle could perhaps turn into a story about a bowtie-wearing giraffe, who is swinging a yo-yo and balancing a grinning fish, who is juggling 3 small eggs! Similarly, a few random squiggly-bark tree squiggles can turn into a story about a leaky tap, a tap dancer and a subsequent mystery storm.

This story telling challenge mirrors the challenge set out by Wakakirri. However, the discipline is not confined to drawing alone, but also to dancing, singing, telling, writing and filming, and the main ingredient being an abstract idea (…tap…) and not just mere lines.
